Based on what I have read on
Facebook, North Tarrytown's "White
Front Meats & Market" was--in its
day--one of our most-beloved local
businesses. Besides the customary
"wedges," White Front was known for
sirloin steaks and veal cutlets--many
said--the best in (either) town!

Did you need your pork chops cut
thin? You might have looked for
Joe, who would then weigh them--
always--right in front of you. Be-
cause the shop was a neighborhood
store, they knew most of the local
families; including yours, probably.
And, of course, it was a good place
to run into people you knew. From
its initial location on Cortlandt St.,
"White Front Meats & Market"
moved to 115 Beekman Ave., re-
placing "Tierney's Candy Store."
(Today, this storefront hosts the
"Beekman Laundromat.")

White Front reportedly extended over
to #113, as well. (Today, this other
storefront is divided between
"Peluqueria Original Unisex Salon"
and "Wily Jewelry.") Looking now at
this 1963 photo, this might have
been taken on a Friday ("Fresh
Fish")! And that 7-Up logo serves as
a reminder that that drink was still
a "contender" in those pre-Sprite
days. But why was it called White
Front? The best butchers are known
to be the ones who keep their
aprons nice and white, establishing
that the meat hardly ever touches
them there.
